The ultimate yachting guide to dog-friendly charters
Exciting pupdate - you don’t have to leave your four-legged friend behind on your next yachting adventure.
A man’s best friend is his dog, or so the saying goes. So, for some families whether they can take their canine companion on holiday can be a dealbreaker. While a luxury yacht might not seem the most accommodating canine environment, dog owners might be pleasantly surprised to learn there are indeed dog-friendly charter yachts available.
Charter and Sales Broker Alastair Callender has had experience successfully organising yacht charters for dog owners. “While most charter yachts don’t allow animals on board, there are a handful of yachts on the charter market that would consider accommodating a small dog on a case-by-case basis,” he advises.
In these scenarios, the yacht will typically ask for an additional security deposit of around €10,000 or more. “This gives the yacht’s owner piece of mind that the charterer will take extra care to mitigate any damage their pet might cause or – in the unfortunate event that damage does occur – the deposit can be used to pay for any necessary cleaning, repairs, or replacements,” Alastair adds.
“In addition, some superyachts will require a reference for the dog, perhaps from a hotel or private jet. This is to help give the yacht owner greater confidence when accepting the charter booking.”
Some yachts are even well set up for dogs if the yacht’s owner is used to bringing their own pet on board, with grassy areas and plenty of treats on hand. However, it’s worth noting that charterers are solely responsible for taking care of their pet while on board, as well as carrying out their own research for traveling with their pooch.
While it’s advisable to check with your trusted yacht charter broker for specific requirements, locations, dates and yacht options, below are a selection of charter yachts that would consider accommodating a dog on a case-by-case basis.
